No matter the color palette, grey remains a favorite of builders and new home styling.
I know because I looked at numerous new homes this last year and it was all over the place. Builders seem to LOVE grey (it must be cheap) and they are not moving toward the warmer color palettes that most designers are moving to due to the overload of cold, grey rooms.
That and wallpaper, some color saturations and some boring all white rooms.
When faced with buying and decorating a new home, choosing art, prints and wall colors is key.
Here are several example of how to style your grey walls, grey rooms, cold interiors without taking on a large painting project.
And that said, there is grey and then there is grey. If you have a few different shades/tones, it can look wonderful when decorating properly. However, having grey in the same color surround you, it can feel overwhelming and very stark.
Six EASY AND AFFORDABLE WAYS TO STYLE A GREY ROOM
GREY WALL FIX #1:
Add warmer and brighter colors to warm up the space in a grey room. You can add warm accessories, wood and artwork that has warmer, but still complementary colors to help create a more cozy space.
GREY WALL FIX #2
On a budget? You can add affordable prints and printable art (just download, print and frame) to your walls in coordinating, but softer colors. To stay in the cool color palette, choose art that has some similar grey, but also some other colors.
You can mat and frame your print and set it off against the grey wall.
GREY WALL FIX #3:
Love the grey and cool tones, but want some drama and eye-catching wall art?
Stick to an artwork that has the same/similar colors, but just a splash of color or drama (like in the artwork shown, INK ME IN). This painting (shown framed) has some greys, black and a little warmer deep white to create visual interest on a smaller wall. Choosing a light mat with dark frame helps set it off on the wall.
GREY WALL FIX #4:
Add a bright pop of color in a grey, boring room.
This is an obvious solution and can really brighten up a space. If you love the way a bright canvas painting can add instant upscale focus to your room, then choose colors you can work around.
Adding a red artwork, like BRIGHTEN MY DAY, can allow you add some reds, oranges, pinks and even yellows to a dull grey room.
GREY WALL FIX #5:
Dark grey walls are dramatic and wonderful in a somber room, like a bedroom or dark academia setting. However, they can be a little too much if left without some color or some light artwork. (PINK SOUL original art diptych)
Using soft colors like pinks or light greys can also help to create a more cozy space. A silver tufted pillow in rich fabric and a soft throw can help!
GREY WALL FIX #6:
Choosing a black and white art print to stay in the color thems and then an interesting decorative frame is also an option to keep the cost low, but add a really unique look to your space.
This “BOLD STROKES” modern art print adds lightness with its white background and a unique look with a decorative wood black frame.
