TRANSCRIPT:

okay what we're going to do today is

00:15

we're gonna start painting on a small

00:19

canvas board this is an 8 by 10 flat

00:23

canvas panel

00:24

it's canvas on the front and it's just

00:27

really a piece of finished cardboard

00:31

sturdy and these are best when they are

00:33

framed when finished what I'm going to

00:36

do is we're going to create something

00:38

like a thick impasto

00:40

I just did this one and you can see the

00:44

thickness of the paint I used a little

00:48

of silver metallic and white on this one

00:52

I'm just gonna let it dry I really like

00:55

doing these types of paintings they're

00:56

very I don't know they're just fun for

01:01

me so I thought I'd do a quick tutorial

01:03

and show you how I'm going to do this

01:06

what I'm going to do is I'm going to use

01:08

a couple of different shades of gold

01:10

this is a soft body acrylic you can do a

01:15

thicker heavier body acrylic for these

01:19

two would work really fantastically

01:22

because you really want to build up that

01:23

texture with your paint and you can also

01:28

mix some some modeling paste in with

01:33

this that would be fantastic as well to

01:36

really build up that that underbody of

01:42

thickness but see I'm laying quite a bit

01:45

on my canvas here this one is not coming

01:49

out as easily as you as you know they

01:51

kind of dry up after a while and it's

01:53

hard to get them out I generally do that

01:56

then just cut right here and kind of

01:59

scoop it all out and save anything

02:02

that's left over I just put this in a

02:03

plastic bag and that will keep

02:05

surprisingly for a long time so if you

02:08

ever run into that issue but what I'm

02:11

doing is I'm going to just lay this with

02:13

a flat knife technique I'm using a small

02:16

palette knife

02:17

I have if you're doing a larger painting

02:19

of course you're gonna want to use a

02:20

very large spatula unless you want very

02:24

small detail but I kind of just lay it

02:27

and if you can see I'm kind of stair

02:29

stepping it down this way and that way

02:32

you get that sort of cascading look like

02:36

that and I'm really going to put a lot

02:39

of paint on here I'm going to let it dry

02:41

and I'm going to do a little different

02:44

color on the top of it for the next

02:47

section so you could play with this it's

02:50

like again it's kind of like frosting I

02:53

really you know I like frosting and cake

02:58

baking and all that sort of things so

03:00

sometimes it's fun to do this and not

03:03

have any calories nothing around to

03:05

worry about to eat but still get that

03:09

same effect and you can really you can

03:13

move this around as much as you want to

03:15

you can add more colors if you like I'm

03:17

doing a very minimalistic monochromatic

03:20

type of painting and I find that works

03:23

really well with modern pieces you know

03:28

but you can as I'm sure you you've seen

03:31

in past O's can be applied to an

03:34

otherwise flat painting to give it a

03:35

little texture and a little interest on

03:40

the surface without applying an

03:42

underneath texture and so I try to get

03:47

this one out of here again just gonna do

03:53

what I told you about grab my scissors

03:58

I'm just gonna cut the very end here and

04:04

I just scoop it out this is fantastic

04:06

obviously foreign impasto painting and I

04:10

like to use instead of just one tone

04:13

these are very very similar but I'm

04:15

using two different tones of gold

04:17

because in the end when they dry they

04:20

will be slightly different and you're

04:22

going to get a little bit different

04:24

toenail

04:25

here and also what would be really nice

04:28

to stand a little bronze on here if you

04:31

wanted to enrich it a bit I think I'm

04:35

just gonna use the gold on this try to

04:39

finish the edges and do a little

04:42

different stroke here and there with my

04:46

paint so this is kind of where I'm at

04:48

now I'm gonna go through and maybe lay

04:50

some a little bit up here but I'm

04:52

generally doing sort of a two-tone

04:55

painting with this so we'll come back

04:58

and we will finish this in the next

05:00

section okay and just a quick update

05:06

here what I did is I took the painting

05:10

itself it was like this and I laid down

05:14

all the texture and then I turned it

05:16

upside down and I brought some of that

05:20

very thick texture down and sort of a

05:24

cascading pattern with my palette knife

05:26

so I really still have a lot of the

05:29

thick texture at the top and this is

05:32

sort of my Cascade pattern that I'm

05:35

gonna go over with a different color

05:37

when we come back so I just wanted you

05:40

to see that's sort of where we left it

05:42

and I need to let this dry really well

05:44

at least 24 hours I would recommend and

05:47

really let that paint set on there so

05:50

then when you put apply surface paint or

05:52

any glosses glue anything like that it

05:55

won't interfere with it

06:04

okay hello welcome we're back and what

06:08

we're doing is working on our gold

06:11

textured painting I've let this dry

06:14

really thoroughly so now what I'm gonna

06:17

do is I've taken a little bronze paint

06:20

on a flat brush a little satin glaze

06:24

right here you can use gloss or satin

06:28

Saten I'm gonna mix these two together

06:31

because I want just a real light sort of

06:35

wash of bronze I am gonna go over this

06:39

with a little bit of bronze because the

06:40

gold is just it's a little too gold and

06:43

wanna a little different metallic on

06:47

here add some water

06:49

well the mist on my painting and on the

06:54

palate

06:56

aka cheap dollar store paper plate that

07:00

I use as my palette and I'm going to go

07:05

ahead and just you always want to mist

07:08

your painting just a little bit when

07:09

it's fully dry that's the key don't mist

07:12

a wet painting you'll be very sorry

07:14

it'll leave drops that eat into the

07:17

paint

07:17

this is fully dried let it dry a couple

07:20

of days so I can go ahead and missed it

07:22

and the reason you missed is so your

07:25

paint doesn't grab in any certain area

07:28

and you have a very nice sort of just a

07:34

little bit of wetness kind of so the

07:37

paint can move around now what I'm going

07:40

to do is I'm just gonna start and laying

07:42

this down a little bit just to kind of

07:45

see where I want that maybe a little too

07:48

much water in here but that's okay cuz

07:50

we can wipe it off and add more and I'm

07:54

just gonna do this definitely gonna be

07:57

doing some wiping off on this kind of

08:04

blot it just to kind of give me an idea

08:07

of what I want I like some of this some

08:11

of this I want gone and this is gonna

08:14

mute down that gold just a little bit

08:16

but not too much because we we

08:18

definitely like the gold metallic the

08:20

shine and the bright

08:21

yes this is gonna create a richness that

08:25

just simple gold is not going to have

08:28

it's kind of OneNote this is going to

08:31

help us create just a little richness

08:33

add a little gloss with that satin glaze

08:38

and go over it this way I'm gonna turn

08:44

it upside down a little more paint here

08:54

to create just a little more richness a

09:01

little bit so just to pick up on the top

09:04

of that that texture this is gonna give

09:11

me a little more of a multicolor effect

09:16

than just the simple gold it's a little

09:21

darker over here you know highly

09:32

technical here with watered up paper

09:35

towel but then sometimes how you get

09:37

your best your best look you can use a

09:39

sponge as well and honestly if I was

09:46

doing this on a larger canvas I would

09:49

have put down a little more base of

09:54

color and sort of built up from beneath

09:58

the gold I wouldn't have just put gold

10:00

on the white I would have probably put

10:03

down little bronze so underneath you'd

10:05

have a little bit of darkness and depth

10:08

showing through then the gold on top and

10:10

then a little more bronze but this is

10:12

sort of an experimentation and a quick

10:17

painting if you will meaning it's not

10:20

gonna take me weeks and weeks to

10:21

complete like it does my larger campuses

10:24

those I definitely

10:26

you know I take weeks to get those done

10:31

but doing something like this especially

10:33

if you are experimenting you don't have

10:37

to worry about that but you do see where

10:39

if you built up the base of color from

10:42

underneath it would add another depth

10:45

another another layer of tone and more

10:50

depth to the canvas so you can see right

10:52

here hopefully that you've got the gold

10:57

you've got the bronze on top and we're

11:00

definitely picking up some of that on

11:04

top of our our texture here which is

11:09

nice and unique so I'm gonna do because

11:12

I want some depth up in here I'm going

11:17

to put some of this bronze in this area

11:19

left to white there's a reason that I

11:23

did that I want it to have more of the

11:25

actual bronze tone up here then have the

11:32

gold tone I'm just painting that down

11:37

sort of a pull down technique I don't I

11:41

don't know if that's a technical term

11:43

but like that and that is going to be

11:47

that sort of you know cascading effect

11:51

that I really want with this painting

11:54

actually this is the top of the painting

11:57

up here and this is going to be the

12:00

bottom of the painting so that's why I'm

12:04

cascading it down like this and I want a

12:09

little more depth in certain areas like

12:11

that so now what I'm going to do and I'm

12:14

going to do this right while the bronze

12:17

is wet I'm not I don't always advocate

12:20

for adding color on top of color when

12:23

it's wet unless you're doing a real sort

12:25

of washy blended look and I I'm gonna do

12:29

this right on top and

12:31

gonna add some white right from the tube

12:35

right not to my palate here just in the

12:38

corner pick some of that up a little bit

12:41

on my brush my brush tool has the bronze

12:43

on it mix a little bit not too much I

12:46

just want a little bit of something else

12:48

besides some white in there a little

12:51

depth I'm going to just take that and

12:57

I'm gonna bring it down right on top of

13:01

my color and that's going to sort of

13:04

grab some of that bronze but it's also

13:06

going to add you know that base of white

13:12

and to do something a little bit

13:15

different kind of move your brush on us

13:18

put it on the side you can kind of scrum

13:21

it down and that gives a real sort of

13:23

interesting sort of reminds me of a snow

13:27

snow is falling effect versus just the

13:31

Cascade Cup a little more white I'm

13:37

gonna bring that down do a little bit

13:40

different brush stroke here than just

13:43

the simple Cascade and I'm going to sort

13:47

of put my brush on a side angle bring

13:50

that down just do some cross hatching in

13:54

here and this is you know completely and

13:57

utterly up to you what you want to do

14:00

but this is what I'm doing just to

14:03

create a little different look up here

14:05

then just the cascaded white I'm gonna

14:09

bring that down like this covering a

14:14

significant portion of the top and a

14:19

little more white here and there picking

14:21

it up you know just kind of bits and

14:25

pieces here of the impasto which is

14:27

going to just gonna leave that because I

14:30

really like that impasto effect

14:35

or on the side I think I'm gonna get

14:38

just a little whiter over here

14:43

maybe bring that down a little more and

14:47

the texture down in here as you can see

14:51

and that's going to give me that sort of

14:54

look that I'm going for so I'm gonna

14:57

finesse this a bit and then I will come

15:00

back and show you the final painting

15:02

which I'm going to put a nice glaze on

15:05

top of and then it will be ready to slip

15:08

into a frame and display
