How to Create Abstract Stencil Art

Not exactly an abstract, but with components from abstract painting techniques.

Create abstract art with stencils using these simple tips:

DO:

Use stencils with large sections! You can really get a nice variance of color/tones with larger sections.

Place off center.  Boring = stencils placed perfect in the center of a canvas. Use your stencil running off the sides for a little more of an abstract look.

Pick up muliple tones at once. Dip your brush into a couple of shades of paint (complementary) to get a more interesting effect.

Let paint set... but not too long. After depositing all the paint, don't immediately lift the stencil. Let it set for a few minutes, but not dry. This will give the paint a light cure and you have less chance of smearing as you lift the stencil.

DON'T

Over blend. Use your paints to create tone-on-tone effects where there is variance, not one blended color.

Add water. Work with full strength heavy body or soft body acrylics for best results.

Have fun, be well, be safe!
